Dr. Cynthia García Coll

The second paper of the Foundation for Child Development’s Scholars of Color Series, ¡BIENVENIDES A LA REVOLUCIÓN! Dr. Cynthia García Coll and the Liberation of Developmental Science, celebrates the groundbreaking scholarship of Dr. Cynthia García Coll. Her work has reshaped child development research by centering culture, community strengths, and social justice. Through decades of scholarship, leadership, and mentorship, García Coll challenged Eurocentric, deficit-based norms and laid the foundation for a liberatory developmental science that affirms the dignity, identity, and potential of children of immigrants and their families.

Dr. García Coll’s work challenges traditional developmental theories by revealing how research often excludes, misrepresents, or pathologizes children of color by applying White, middle-class norms as universal standards. The Integrative Model, developed by Garcia Coll and her colleagues, offers a powerful alternative: a framework that recognizes culture, racism, social context, and community assets as central factors shaping development, rather than peripheral considerations or deficits. Her scholarship confronts barriers such as racial prejudice, discrimination, and structural inequities, while also highlighting the resilience, strengths, and adaptive capacities of immigrant communities.

Dr. García Coll offers a transformative vision of developmental science grounded by a liberation framework. By redefining the foundations of child development research to be inclusive, just, and rooted in respect for community identities and experiences, her legacy invites scholars, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to rethink how we understand and support children’s growth and development. In doing so, she calls on us to build systems that honor diversity, promote equity and liberation, and nurture the full potential of all children.
