The Foundation for Child Development’s Scholars of Color Series is dedicated to amplifying the invaluable contributions of scholars of color whose work extends beyond academia. This Series honors scholars from diverse fields, including developmental psychology, early childhood education, and education policy, all of whom are deeply committed to enhancing the lives of children marginalized by racism, xenophobia, or economic inequality.
As we look ahead on our journey to champion social justice for young children, we also look back to draw wisdom and inspiration from those who paved the way. These scholars have not only advanced the fields of education and child development but also challenged systems of inequity, transforming how we think about and support marginalized communities. We are committed to continuing their legacy — pushing boundaries, advocating for systemic change, and creating a more equitable and inclusive future for all children.

Challenging the Status Quo
In a society where White-centric norms often dominate, our featured scholars challenge these perspectives by celebrating the cultural strengths of children from communities of color and their families. The work of these scholars not only enriches the academic discourse but also paves the way for more inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive research, policy, and practice.
Responding to Today’s Challenges
Launched in 2022 amidst significant societal and political turmoil in the United States, the Series responds to the backlash against racial and social progress. This backlash includes attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as the passage of anti-DEI laws and anti-immigrant policies that disproportionately harm communities of color. Through this Series, the Foundation highlights the enduring legacies of scholars whose contributions to marginalized populations remain underrepresented in mainstream theories and in the evidence cited in policy and practice.
Inspiring Future Generations
Ultimately, the Scholars of Color Series serves as a collective call to action, inspiring and empowering a new generation of scholars to strive for a more inclusive, equitable, and just society for all children, their families, and communities. Join us in this journey to advocate for systemic change by celebrating the voices that often go unheard and amplifying the vital relevance of their work in improving the lives of young children today.
